QLD: Minister heads to flooded Gulf to explain govt response
BRISBANE, Feb 18 AAP - Queensland's emergency services minister will confront claims his government has mismanaged disaster relief efforts when he visits flood-bound Gulf of Carpentaria communities.
Neil Roberts and Premier Anna Bligh have come under fire from Normanton and Karumba residents, concerned that the fates of their businesses and farms are being ignored.
Both communities have been isolated for about five weeks in the wake of two cyclones, and there's no end in sight.
Opposition frontbencher Ray Hopper said the government's relief efforts to date were akin to the Bush administration's bungling of the Hurricane Katrina recovery.
Mr Roberts, who visited affected residents last month, will return on Wednesday with a warning that communities face up to another five weeks of isolation.
"I understand how hard this must be for residents and I want to talk to them, face to face, to hear what they have to say," he said.
"I also want to assure residents the state government is doing everything it possibly can to help locals."
Stock losses due to flooding have been put at 100,000-150,000 head. No estimate has yet been put on business losses.
Cattle fodder drops costing $3 million began on Wednesday.
More than 190 tonnes of essential food supplies have been delivered to Normanton and Karumba by air and sea since the flooding hit.
A barge carrying 85 tonnes of non-essential supplies for local businesses left Cairns on Tuesday.
Fortnightly barge services and supplementary air deliveries will continue until roads into the communities reopen.
A temporary water purification plant will be airlifted into Karumba later on Wednesday by the Australian Defence Force.
It will ensure supplies of fresh water after the pipeline from Normanton developed a fault.

Committment
Commitment
Until one is committed
there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back,
always ineffectiveness.
Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation),
there is one elementary truth,
the ignorance of which kills countless ideas
and splendid plans:
That the moment one definitely commits oneself,
then Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one
that would otherwise never have occurred.
A whole stream of events issues from the decision,
raising in one's favor all manner
of unforeseen incidents and meetings
and material assistance,
which no man could have dreamt
would have come his way.
I have learned a deep respect
for one of Goethe's couplets:
``Whatever you can do, or dream you can -- begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.''
--- W.N. Murray from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition, 1951

Good news about website costs
Current industry opinion is that any business not on the Internet now or in the near future is most certainly missing out on the rewards of this vibrant and rapidly growing industry. It seems however that many people think that getting their website on the Internet is an expensive venture; fortunately, this need not necessarily be true.
Clients are now starting to see the value in advertising their products and services online without the huge costs, of printing, publishing and distribution. The market is a global one, its 24/7 and it works while you sleep… thus adding far greater value to the costs outlaid. There are many different ways to benefit from having a web site, whether it is simply for personal gain, or to aid your business success. Some clients simply need a few web pages to showcase their products, much like an online business card. It needn’t be an expensive venture when you’re starting out :)
Businesses no longer need to constrain the focus to only the local scene, but by using the Internet, they can venture into international and regional markets, with greater ease. The freedom to browse anywhere and interact with anyone is enough to tempt the smallest of businesses and the most introverted of people to get on the Net; hence Net users are increasing in numbers, at an alarming rate, approximately 50,000 per day. (Don’t quote me on it :).
